Hyundai/Kia theft settlement: up to $4,500 — but only if the free upgrade was already done
By ClaimBridge Team
If a 2011–2022 Hyundai or Kia was stolen — or someone tried — you may be able to claim up to $4,500 from the multistate immobilizer settlement. These are the models built without an engine immobilizer, the flaw behind the theft method that spread across social media. But two conditions decide whether you can claim, and the second one is the one most coverage leaves out.
The two conditions
First, the theft or attempted theft must have happened on or after April 29, 2025. A theft during the earlier 2022–2024 wave does not qualify here. Second, at the moment it happened, the free anti-theft Software Upgrade must already have been installed on your vehicle — or you must be able to document that you had an appointment booked to get it. It must also predate your free zinc sleeve installation, or March 31, 2027, whichever comes first.
That second condition is worth acting on even if nothing has happened to your car. The Software Upgrade is free at any authorized Hyundai or Kia dealer, and it is what makes you eligible if anything happens later.
Which vehicles are covered
Eligible Vehicles are 2011–2022 Hyundai and Kia models that were not factory-equipped with an engine immobilizer: on the Hyundai side the Accent, Elantra, Elantra GT, Genesis Coupe, Kona, Palisade, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport, Santa Fe XL, Sonata, Tucson, Veloster and Venue; on the Kia side the Forte, K5, Optima, Rio, Sedona, Seltos, Sorento, Soul and Sportage. The settlement's VIN lookup is what actually decides it, and it answers in seconds. You do not need a claim ID and you do not need a notice in the post.
How much it pays
Up to $4,500 if a qualifying theft resulted in a total loss, up to $2,250 for a partial loss, and up to $375 in reasonable expenses for a qualifying theft attempt — insurance deductibles, increased premiums, towing, transport, and personal property stolen or damaged. Each of those is a cap on your actual out-of-pocket loss, not a payment everyone receives. Taking a total or partial loss payment ends eligibility for any later incident.
What you have to show, and how you get paid
This claim needs documents: proof of ownership, a police report or insurance records for the incident, proof of the loss itself, and paperwork for anything an insurer or the manufacturer already paid you. If something is missing, the administrator notifies you in writing and gives you 45 days to cure it rather than rejecting the claim outright. Payment issues within 90 days of the final determination, as a prepaid Mastercard or a physical check.
The deadline is not the real clock
Claims run to March 31, 2027 — but that is the outer bound. The administrator states on page after page that the fund is limited and disbursed on a rolling basis until it is exhausted, after which no further claims are paid. Filing early is worth actual money here. This is the settlement the state attorneys general negotiated, separate from the consumer class action, so the administrator calls you an Eligible Consumer rather than a class member. ClaimBridge lays out what registering takes and readies your registration — you file it, and you keep 100% of the payout.
Frequently asked questions
My Hyundai was stolen in 2023 — can I claim?
Not under this settlement. The theft or attempted theft has to have happened on or after April 29, 2025. The earlier wave of thefts, including the whole 2022–2024 period, falls outside this settlement's window.
I never got the free software upgrade. Am I eligible?
Not for a payment on a theft that happened before you had it. The upgrade must already have been installed at the time of the theft or attempt, or you must be able to document that an appointment was booked. It is free at any authorized Hyundai or Kia dealer, and getting it done is what makes you eligible going forward.
Do I need a claim ID or a notice in the post?
No. The VIN is the key. Enter it on the official settlement site and an eligible VIN takes you straight to the claim portal.
What is the deadline?
March 31, 2027 — but the fund is limited and paid out on a rolling basis until it is exhausted, after which no further claims are paid. The date is the outer bound, not the thing to plan around.
