PowerSchool Naviance Student Privacy
Against PowerSchool Holdings LLC; Hobsons Inc.; Heap Inc.; Board of Education of the City of Chicago
Naviance, the college- and career-planning platform, allegedly let third-party trackers intercept students' activity. Anyone in the U.S. who logged in as a student between August 2021 and January 2026 can claim an equal cash share of $17.25 million — no documents — until July 27, 2026.
About this settlement
Q.J. v. PowerSchool Holdings LLC (N.D. Ill., No. 1:23-cv-05689) alleged that the Naviance platform (Hobsons, later PowerSchool) embedded third-party analytics and session-tracking tools that intercepted students' confidential communications, in violation of federal wiretap law and state privacy statutes. This is not the December 2024 PowerSchool data breach — it's about tracking inside Naviance itself; the defendants deny wrongdoing. The $17,250,000 non-reversionary fund pays every approved claimant an equal pro-rata cash share (no tiers, no documentation; check, Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle), roughly 45 days after final approval. The class is nationwide: anyone in the United States who, while a student, logged into Naviance at least once between August 18, 2021 and January 23, 2026. Adults attest for themselves; a parent or legal guardian files for a minor (the form asks for the student's school email from the Naviance period). Claims are due July 27, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. CT; the final approval hearing is August 19, 2026. ClaimBridge lays out what registering takes and readies your registration as a class member. What you can claim: a pro-rata share of a $17,250,000 fund, net of fees, costs and the service award. There is no documented-loss tier: you attest that you logged into the Naviance platform as a student at least once between August 18, 2021 and January 23, 2026. The administrator publishes no per-person estimate.
